INFRATEL, in collaboration with the Zambia Institute of Public Relations and Communication (ZIPRC), Chalimbana University, and other key stakeholders, officially launched its ambitious Tree Planting Initiative today at Chalimbana University. The initiative, aligned with Zambia’s environmental sustainability goals, aims to plant 2,000 trees across the country in schools, hospitals, and community spaces to combat deforestation, mitigate climate change, and promote a culture of environmental stewardship.

The event responded to the Speaker of the National Assembly’s #PlantATreeChallenge, highlighting the urgent need for collective climate action. Hon. Malungo Chisangano, MP, First Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly, officiated the launch, on behalf of the Right Honourable Nelly BK Mutti, commending INFRATEL for integrating corporate responsibility with environmental sustainability.

“INFRATEL exemplifies leadership by showing that progress in digital technology can be harmonized with environmental stewardship,” Hon. Chisangano said. “This initiative symbolizes hope and resilience for our nation, setting a benchmark for sustainable development.”

Dr Evans Silavwe, the Chief Executive Officer of INFRATEL, emphasised the initiative’s focus on three strategic pillars:

  • Sustainability and Environmental Stewardship: Enhancing Zambia’s tree cover, reducing soil erosion, improving water retention, and mitigating climate change effects.
  • Educational Empowerment and Community Engagement: Collaborating with schools and universities to foster environmental responsibility among the youth.
  • Collaborative Social Responsibility: Leveraging partnerships with ZIPRC and Chalimbana University to combine resources and expertise for sustainable solutions.

“By planting these trees, we are nurturing a legacy for future generations. This initiative embodies our commitment to Zambia’s green future. said Dr. Silavwe.”

Representing ZIPRC, ZIPRC Registrar Mr Nimon Muleya highlighted the crucial role of public relations and communication in raising awareness and driving action on climate issues.

“At ZIPRC, we understand the power of communication in fostering a culture of environmental responsibility. This partnership exemplifies how strategic collaboration can drive meaningful impact,” said Mr Muleya.

Chalimbana University served as the ideal venue for the launch, symbolising the intersection of education and sustainability. Hon. Chisangano lauded the university’s Climate Change Association for championing environmental awareness and action.

This initiative aligns with Zambia’s commitments under the Green Economy and Climate Change Bill No. 18 of 2024, which advocates for climate adaptation and disaster risk reduction. Hon. Chisangano reiterated the importance of partnerships among government, private sector, and civil society in addressing Zambia’s environmental challenges.

“Partnerships are the cornerstone of meaningful progress,” Hon. Chisangano noted. “Together, we can combine our resources and expertise to create sustainable solutions.”

The INFRATEL Tree Planting Initiative reflects the company’s dedication to balancing digital transformation with environmental sustainability, reinforcing its role as Zambia’s leading provider of digital infrastructure and a responsible corporate citizen.
